The last word of this line, “full,” calls back to another element of the story: Zoe’s success as a baker. She has made a huge difference in her world and the worlds of those around her, and she can now talk to and hug this person with her identical smile. She found enough evidence to get Marcus’ conviction overturned. This last line comes after a satisfying scene that deserves a nice, warm cookie ending like this. The story follows Zoe as she gets to know her father and, ultimately, tries to get him released for wrongful conviction. He has been incarcerated for all of Zoe’s life, in prison for murder, and Zoe’s mom has kept all thoughts of him out of their lives.

This is a spoiler because Marcus is Zoe’s birth father and the author of that mysterious letter in the first line.

When the song ended, Marcus and I both collapsed on the couch with big, identical smiles, and I felt grateful and happy and full.
